A daily practice of noticing how you feel

A daily practice ofnoticing how you feel

About the project

Betr is a mental wellness app built on a simple idea: feeling better starts with noticing how you feel, and why.

Betr already had a working app. What it did not have was a reason to open it tomorrow. Tracking, journaling, goals and analysis each lived behind their own tab, five features side by side rather than one habit. Your mood went in, and very little came back out.

What began as a brief to redesign its home screen became a rethink of the whole app. Over three months we worked alongside Betr’s own team, from the first check in to a design system ready for development.

The vision

Make understanding how you feel a daily habit, not something you reach for on a bad day.

Betr’s aim is to find the patterns: when you feel good, when you do not, and what actually makes the difference. That only works if people show up every day, including the hard ones.

So the design question was never a single screen. It was how to make one short daily loop worth coming back to: quick enough on a bad day, and rewarding enough that the tenth entry feels better than the first.

The loop

Notice, reflect, understand

Every screen in Betr either feeds the loop or reads from it.

Naming a feeling in one swipe. Seven feelings, each with its own colour and face, then how strongly, and what it is about. One decision per screen and nothing more.

From a mood to the reason behind it. A morning and an evening journal, a weekly question and an open page, each one answerable by voice or by typing. The prompt is written from what you just told the app.

Someone to talk it through with. Mio picks up where your last entry left off and helps you go deeper, at your pace, by voice or text.

Where the days add up. A vitality score, what lifts you and what drains you across the areas of your life, and the themes running through your own words.

The idea

One loud moment

Betr is quiet by design: near black, a serif voice, one violet accent. The check in is the exception, in bright, flat colour. It is loud exactly where the app asks the most of you.

Your words, handed back

Every insight in Betr is built from what you wrote, not from generic advice. The Life Map reads like a mirror, not a report.

Trust you can see

A companion inside a journal only works if people are honest with it. So Mio’s memory is visible, editable and yours to empty at any time.

Built to grow

Betr was handed over as a system, not a set of screens: 265 screens and the components behind them, so the product can keep evolving long after launch.

Impact

A habit people come back to

In the months after the redesign, the loop did what it was built to do. More people came back each week, and most check ins now end in a reflection rather than a single tap.

  • +34%

    Seven-day retention

  • 71%

    Reflective check ins

  • 2×

    Journal entries per user
